Love
Letters is described as
a
performance
piece,
which in the words of the author, "needs no
theatre, no lengthy rehearsal, no special set, no
memorization of lines, and no commitment beyond the
night of performance." It is comprised of
letters exchanged over a lifetime between two people
who grew up together and went their separate ways,
but continued to share confidences. As the actors
read their letters aloud, what is created is a
touching and frequently funny pair of character
studies in which what is implied is as revealing and
meaningful as what is actually written. The story is
of Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner;
childhood friends whose correspondence begins with
birthday party thank you notes and summer camp
postcards and continues through their boarding
school and college years, as well as the years
after. Their letters reveal to the audience how much
they really meant and gave to each other over the
years, although physically apart, but spiritually as
close as only true lovers can be. |
